The Background

SFC’s student interests work is rooted in its own statutory framework, the outcomes of SFC’s Review of Coherent Provision and Sustainability and SFC’s Strategic Plan. This statutory framework provides the basis on which SFC is developing its work in access and equalities, whilst building a portfolio of activities that focuses on student interests.

Student interests - background

“Protecting the interests of current and future students in relation to their education, support needs, access and participation will form a more central part in our development over the lifetime of this plan, working in partnership with students and representatives.”

Our approach

Student interests - approach

We are working collaboratively and in partnership with others, internally and externally, to ensure our approach is:

  • Student centred; that we work transparently and report on our activities and outcomes in a way that is accessible to students and graduates, engaging with them to celebrate our successes and to learn from missed opportunities.
  • Grounded in the latest research, evidence base and an understanding of the student lived experience, particularly in the context of the changing demographic of student populations.
  • Open and equal and does not inadvertently create disadvantage for students and graduates who participate (e.g. cost of travel/accommodation/time away from work etc).
  • At a system level:
    • While it is important to learn from individual cases and experiences, SFC does not engage with, or work on individual cases.
    • We will work with students, learners and practitioners from across the tertiary sector including apprentices, international students and research students.

What are we doing?

In considering the commitments made throughout our Review and Strategic Plan, and building on the foundation of SFC’s statutory framework, three workstreams have been confirmed. These workstreams are creating an internal framework that can be used to identify priorities and consider the relevance or applicability of new activities.

Each of these workstreams is composed of overarching goals and annual aims and objectives. The goals are:
