“I think what has been different is that it’s been a really collaborative project.”

Rachel Elliott, CPD Business Development Officer, University of Aberdeen

This project built on an existing partnership between all three North-East institutions in the National Energy Skills Accelerator and other key agencies. It focused on improving understanding of the low-carbon energy jobs of the future and the education pathways needed to access them.

The pilot project developed the web-based Energy Career Pathways Tool to help people identify the qualifications required for specific jobs in the energy sector. The tool also provided information on where these qualifications were offered.

The National Energy Skills Accelerator engaged with communities to develop and test the resource ensuring the tool was accessible and user-friendly.

Project Aims and Objectives

The aim of this pilot project was to develop an interactive pathway tool to communicate the qualifications and education routes into specific jobs in the energy sector.

Objectives:

  1. Identify qualifications required for specific jobs in the renewable energy sector.
  2. Develop and test the interactive pathway tool.
  3. Launch the interactive pathway tool.

Key Working/Strategic Groups Established to Deliver the Project

National Energy Skills Accelerator Board: The board included senior representatives from each of the five partners: The University of Aberdeen, Robert Gordon University, North East Scotland College, Skills Development Scotland, and Energy Transition Zone Ltd. The Board governed the project, providing strategic oversight and final approvals.

National Energy Skills Accelerator Delivery Group: The group included representatives from each of the institutions and was responsible for the day-to-day management and operational aspects of the project. The group worked closely with the project manager to progress each stage of the project.

Industry Stakeholders: The National Energy Skills Accelerator consulted industry partners, including energy operators, supply chain companies and trade bodies to determine and verify job roles and qualification routes.

User Groups: The National Energy Skills Accelerator engaged industry, education and community representatives throughout the testing and refinement phases of development to ensure the final product met user requirements.

Outputs Delivered

Energy Careers Pathways Tool: EnergyCareerPathways.com hosts the pathway tool. The tool an interactive, question-based process that guides users through various career pathway options within the energy sector. Six job roles were covered in the pilot tool, with job profiles, short overviews and videos provided for each. Additional resources available include FAQs, partner information, and upskilling links.
